JONATHAN PENDRAGON'S GRAIL QUEST :: PART 4

Trinidad

If you follow Alan Watsonʼs newsletter, you are probably aware that there has been an ongoing controversy involving props Charlotte sold to other magicians. Seven illusions had been left in Trinidad two years ago; three of these were among the props sold. None of our illusions were sold with my knowledge. This was particularly painful for me because among them were several illusions I designed, including Clearly Impossible, the original Fire Cage—both built for me by Bill Smith—and my Broom Suspension harness. I was able to negotiate a return of Clearly Impossible with Scott McFall, who graciously agreed to a trade. Trinidad was a much greater problem, and it has taken me more than a year to retrieve the props. A few I will keep but, as I stated in Alan Watsonʼs newsletter, I will honor Charlotteʼs sales and turn over three illusions to their new owners.

In order to get the props out of Trinidad, I agreed to perform three full-evening shows with the original promoter, who had gone to great lengths to care for our illusions, keeping them in climate-controlled storage for two years. Since I no longer perform with Charlotte, I had to train a new assistant to perform the illusions with me. Fortunately West suggested I use her daughter, Jacosa, who is a talented trapeze artist. This appealed to me because of my own background in gymnastics; we spoke the same language. Mystina worked as both magician and assistant, presenting two of her acts and helping me in between. My brother Mark took control of backstage—a job heʼs done for me throughout my career. West not only learned how to produce a show, but also how to “call” it (which means she sat in the light and sound booth, directing all the cues). Her performance garnered praise from the promoters, and the crew. For me, she was simply miraculous.

I know—it sounds like a Mickey Rooney/Judy Garland movie... which is appropriate because we were performing in an arena that would dwarf most MGM soundstages. I never would have made it through the experience if it wasnʼt for the support I received from my crew. Emotionally I was raw. This was the first full evening Grand Illusion show I had done in two years. Even assembling the illusions evoked a mixture of nostalgia and loss. The energy that fueled the show was a collective force of will. everyone involved believed in me and I, in turn, relied on them to make me look good. Jacosa was a natural: lithe and beautiful, and the strength of her performance matched my notoriously energetic style perfectly. Mystina took on the challenge of my Broom Suspension harness, though nobody but Charlotte had ever previously managed to meet the physical demands of the abbreviated design. She did it so successfully that I immediately resolved to ask the new owner for the occasional loan of the prop (Sam Ferenz and I built the harness by hand more than thirty years ago; I canʼt imagine trying to reproduce it). Mark—my legendary twin brother—not only worked his ass off backstage, but also got to do bits onstage... as himself!

I wasnʼt certain that I could present a full evening show as an individual, and not as a couple. I have done cabaret and close-up by myself since I was 17, but The Pendragons was a collaboration. Walking on as “Jonathan Pendragon” was new, and yet oddly comfortable. I realized that I still had something to give to Grand Illusion, and that my new efforts must include the style I have always loved.

To be continued.... Jonathan Pendragon

MNW #318 :: RICHARD WISEMAN

On this episode of the Magic Newswire's "Spirit of Magic" podcast, my guest is best selling author and psychologist Richard Wiseman. I am joined by my friend and co-host Brian Brushwood. In his latest book, "Paranormality," Richard discusses how a disbelief into paranormal concepts like elepathy, fortune-telling and out-of-body experiences can produce insights into our brains, human behavior and belief systems. We also touch on his lifelong interest in magic and the ethics attached to various aspects of our art.

CARTER BEATS THE DEVIL TO COME TO A THEATER NEAR YOU?

There have been several attempts to adapt Gold's "Carter Beats the Devil" to the big screen, all of which vanished before coming close to reality. Now, the LA Times reports that Warner Brothers has green lit the project and selected Johnny Depp to play the title role.

The world of magic is ripe for drama, what with its fierce rivalries and convincing in-movie performances (in a film, any illusion can look real). That world is also lucrative, as both "The Prestige" and "The Illusionist" proved in 2006. And far more than more than making rabbits disappear, Hollywood loves making green things appear.

ISRAELI MENTALISTS IN THE US

Thanks to Sean Lough for sending me a link to this article from the Wall Street Journal discussing Mentalism. Asi Wind, Lior Suchard and Ehud Segev all get a mention.

Why is the tradition of mentalism alive in Israel, but not so much in America, especially with a role model as dashing as Simon Baker? Is it a skill Israelis are taught in the army? Both Mr. Segev (who was not trained in the army) and Mr. Wind (who was) evoked the legacy of Uri Geller, a 64-year-old Israeli entertainer who traffics in the areas of mysticism and magic.

In an interview, Mr. Segev, who refers to himself as "The Mentalizer," travels around the world and does many corporate Wall Street events, called Mr. Geller "the father of modern mentalism," and pointed to Mr. Geller's spoon bending as a trick that put him on the map. "I used to say, 'I'm a mentalist and people would say, 'What's a mentalist?'"

Now, with various reality shows under his belt, and of course the hit show on CBS, "everybody knows what a mentalist is." But Mr. Baker's procedural has had an adverse effect, too: "I used to be the first thing that came up on Google when you typed in 'mentalist.' Now it's so much harder to get to people."

MAGIC ZONE MANHATTAN

The current site of the often referred to "Cafeteria" of magic in NY, "Rustico's inspires and article in the New York Times reporting on the midtown magic scene:

Saturdays typically find conjurers getting together to talk shop and share tricks. They gather at magic stores and at a Midtown Manhattan pizza restaurant, Cafe Rustico II, the site for an informal weekly meeting that began decades ago and continues as a proving ground and social club.

For those serious about mastering magic, the Rustico’s group can be an important resource. Newcomers may first have to show that their interest is genuine, but for an art based on secrecy, most of the magicians are generous about helping anyone who wanders in and wants to learn to amaze. “It’s like the medieval guild system in action, where apprentices learn from masters,” said Jack Diamond, a former mathematics professor who is a regular there.

MNW #316 :: CREATIVE MAGIC

On this special edition of the Magic Newswire's "Magic Newscast," I am joined by Brian Daniel of Creative Magic (CreativeMagic.net). What I love about Brian and his story is the fact that he thought outside the box, both literaly and figuratively, as a designer, manufacturer and builder known for light weight props.

Yesterday, Brian announced that he will cease manufacturing of all Creative Magic products. On this episode of the podcast, Brian shares exclusive details on how he plans to wrap the company, a story that brings him to the cover of the latest issue of Magic Magazine.

In addition, listen closely to this interview for instructions on how to win one of several prizes including a pass to attend the upcoming Essential Magic Conference in July!

DAVID BLAINE ANNOUNCES NEW SHOW

Our friends over at iTricks first reported David Blaine's announcement of an upcoming special via TinyChat last week. Today, the International Business Times shares some additional details:

"It's better than anything that's ever been done, by me at least... It's the most original concept I've ever come up with. It's taken me four years to sort out."

He plans to broadcast the event in May on NBC, according to Digitalspy.com. He hopes to take the stunt on tour all over Europe and North America.

During the video chat, he also demonstrated a few of his new tricks, showed a video of him swimming with sharks and announced his new card deck called the White Lions. He stated that the show will be 100 percent street magic and full of completely new material.
