BLAINE BAFFLES BILL

From the New York Post:

David Blaine astounded Bill Clinton with card tricks at Sting and Trudie Styler’s Upper West Side penthouse at a fund-raiser for the Clinton Global Initiative. We’re told Blaine even pulled a folded card out of his watch, to the ex-president’s amazement.

MNW140 :: JON RACHERBAUMER REDUX

This is one of our most requested from the lost files of the MagicNewswire Spirit of Magic Podcast. My conversation with the amazing Jon Racherbaumer was recorded in August of 2009. Unfortunately, with the unexpected transition from Mevio this conversation was reduced from almost two hours to less than 20 minutes. Fortunately, I was able to recover the original files. That means that this is a totally remastered and ad free edition of this interview.

If you don't know the name of Jon Racherbaumer, you should either walk away from magic or take some time to explore his influence on our art form. Jon is one of those guys that managed to connect to some of the greatests names in the modern history of magic including Ed Marlo, Eddie Fields, Orson Welles, and Senator Crandall. Given the controversies surrounding Blackpool & FISM 2010, it is also interesting to note that he was at one time blackballed by both the IBM & the SAM. Please join us for Part One of our interview with Jon Racherbaumer and learn more about lesbian bowlers, the "Magic Mafia" and how a good magician becomes controversial.

YANN FRISCH'S CUPS AND BALLS ARE SIMPLY ABSURD!

Several non-magic sites like Gawker have recently taken note of Yann Frisch's being named "Champion du Monde" at the 2012 Beijing International Magic Convention with his latest itteration of "Baltass", his absurdist take on the cups and balls with tomatoes. With almost 1.2 million views on YouTube as I write this, you may already have seen this clip but it is well worth watching one more time to learm more about how a magician can truly do it "right!" Congrats again Yann!

MNW337 :: HOWARD HAMBURG

On the 337th episode of the Spirit of Magic Podcast, I am thrilled and honored to welcome Howard Hamburg to the Magic Newswire family. Have you ever wanted to spend and hour or so with Dai Vernon,Michael Skinner, Larry Jennings, Charlie Miller, JC Wagner, Tony Giorgio, Francis Carlyle or any of the legends of magic that preceded this generation? If so, I am more than happy to get you one step closer o that goal by bringing you this interview with Howard. You are about to hear stories about many of the people that we idolize in magic today from an underground card magician that was an intimate of them all. As we launch this episode, I am also very happy to announce that the Magic Newswire's "Spirit of Magic" podcast has now exceeded Two Million Downloads since we first began tracking such things in March of 2008. Thank you so much for this endorsement of what I do. When I first began recording these conversations, I never imagined where it would take me and I cannot that you, the listeners, enough for the emails, donations and downloads. I more than justifies this small contribution to our art that I make by producing these interviews. Again, from the bottom of my heart, I thank you.

JUDGE ORDERS ARREST OF WAYNE HOUCHIN'S ATTACKER

From the Washington Post:

"A judge on Tuesday ordered the arrest of a local television show host who set fire to the hair of a U.S. magician, burning his scalp, face and arm.

The judge announced the decision just hours after TV host Franklin Barazarte told The Associated Press in a phone interview from New York that the incident was an accident. He tossed flaming liquid on Wayne Houchin’s head as a “blessing” during a Nov. 26 taping of the show."

According to the prosecutor's office, a doctor has certified that Wayne suffered first degree burns on his scalp, face and right arm as a result of the incident. The alleged attacker continues to claim that the insicent was nothing more than an unfortunate accident.   You can watch the unedited footage of the attack here

MAGIC FOR DECEMBER 2102 :: STAN ALLEN

While 2013 is still over a month away, this issue officially turns the final page on another year of MAGIC Magazine. And it's been quite the year. Cover stories alone featured Pit Hartling, John Bannon, Fielding West, Steve Cohen, Marco Tempest, Jay Sankey, Mike Bent, Neil Patrick Harris, Derek Hughes, David Copperfield, and Korean FISM Winners. And now Milt Larsen and the Magic Castle, which begins celebrating its 50th Anniversary in January. How do we cover such a milestone? By going straight to the founder and twisting his arm to write about the "magic house" he built. Okay, it really didn't take too much arm twisting, as Milt is still a writer at heart. This month, he tells how the club and the clubhouse came to be. And while this starts us at the very beginning, the following twelve installments, like Milt himself, will be jumping all over the place. And like the Castle itself, this should be a fun ride.

One of the big additions to the MAGIC family this year is MAGIC Plus. It's the bridge between print and digital, and it's available free to everyone holding a print copy of this magazine, whether you subscribe or pick it up in a magic shop. This month, MAGIC Plus features bonus videos from "Talk About Tricks," "Directions," "Bent on Deception," and "The Almighty Dollar." We also have two bonus Pluses this month. Our feature story on Jason England and Paul Wilson's "Road Trip!" is divided into eight parts. Each part has a video available, so you view the clips as you read the story. The other bonus this month is a holiday gift from Joshua Jay. Spoiler Alert: it's a video download called The Bluff Shift Bundle — and it's free! So, if you have not visited MAGIC Plus yet, sit down with your print copy, go to our website, and enjoy.

It's all in the December 2012 issue of MAGIC Magazine. If you haven't already received your copy, here's a look at what else is "between the covers."

ILLUSION NOIR : ROB ZABRECKY

Magic Newswire podcast featured guest Rob Zabrecky was interviewed by Alibi.com just prior to a weekend of magic at Albuquerque's Kimo Theater. Other performers featured on the weekend of November 24th were David Kaplan and Danny Cole. In the interview Rob tells the tale of performing his first magic effect for a concert audience when he was with the band Possum Dixon.

"He bought a vanishing handkerchief trick. But he knew the old-fashioned illusion might not play well before an audience of Baltimore hipsters. On stage, he set aside his bass and unwrapped a condom instead. He made it disappear. The crowd went wild. 'I fell in love with the culture of magic,' Zabrecky says."
