BROKEN WAND :: CHARLES REYNOLDS :: BY LEVENT
I am saddened to report that my friend Charles Reynolds passed away in the early morning hours of November 4, 2010 in his home in Greenwich Village, Manhattan after a long illness.
Charles was born in Toledo, Ohio on September 9, 1932. As a young man he became heavily involved with magic when he met the performer/magic dealer Carlo.
In college Charles studied television and theater and upon graduation he moved to New York City and for a time was a camera operator for CBS. Later he worked as a picture editor at "Popular Photography" magazine and was the Chairman of the Photography Department of the famous "School for Visual Arts" and was a friend of many of the great photographers of the 20th Century. As a professional photographer Charles worked for periodicals such as "Time" magazine, but his photographic passion was in capturing images of circuses and circus performers.
In the realm of magic, Charles was the friend and student of many great artists such as Dai Vernon, Roy Benson and Charlie Miller. In the early 1970s, he befriended Doug Henning and became Doug's magic consultant on all of his TV specials. Charles was also a magic consultant to Siegfried and Roy, Harry Blackstone Jr. and many Broadway shows. He was the author of several books on Magic history and the associate producer of the highly regarded British TV series "The Best of Magic" and "Heroes of Magic".
Charles leaves behind his beloved wife, Regina and legions of friends in the worlds of Magic and Photography. His kindness, knowledge and wisdom will be missed.
Best regards,M
Levent
PROFESSOR PERSI DIACONIS TALKS MAGIC ON NPR
Stanford Mathematics Professor Persi Diaconis is featured in an interview on NPR in which he discusses his love of both math and magic. For those not yet aware of Professor Diaconis, Persi was a protege of the other "Professor" Dai Vernon. He abandoned a career in music and magic to study mathematical statistics at Harvard University, and completed his PhD in 1974. He has often lectured on the mathematics behind popular magic tricks and on such topics as how spy codes are encrypted. He has also used his expertise in mathematics and magic to investigate claims in parapsychology. This was broadcast on "To the Best of Our Knowledge" from Wisconsin Public Radio.

KRESKIN REAPPEARS ON THE LAS VEGAS STRIP
From Robin Leach in his Strip Scribbles column we learn that the Amazing Kreskin is to begin a run on the Las Vegas Strip tonight at the Riviera.
For more than six decades, world-renowned mentalist The Amazing Kreskin has stunned audiences with his mind-boggling predictions and mental tests. Tonight, he returns to town for an extended run taking over the former Comedy Club at the Riviera after a sold-out headline appearance at the Sahara.
“Even I couldn’t have predicted this,” The Amazing Kreskin said. “We had such an incredible visit here two months ago that I just had to shuffle dates around to make this extended run work out.” He will perform his legendary check test nightly, where members of the audience will hide his nightly paycheck in the theater. If he’s unable to locate it, he will forfeit his fee over to charity.
MAGIC & MERLOT WITH EUGENE BURGER
With his distinctive flowing white beard and round rimmed spectacles, Eugene Burger could be mistaken for Santa Claus. But don’t let looks fool you.
Burger – who has been called “Chicago’s Best Magician” by Chicago Magazine, “one of the most respected names in close-up magic today” by the Chicago Tribune, and “one of the most influential magicians of the 20th century” by Magic Magazine – is no Santa. He is, however, one of the finest magicians in the business.
Burger’s amazing magic skills will be on display during a special performance on Thursday, November 18, when the Elmhurst Heritage Foundation presents “Magic & Merlot: An Evening with Eugene Burger”.
For anyone that missed it the first time around, here is the documentary on Eugene from Culture Unplugged:

STEINMEYER'S LONG ANTICIPATED THURSTON BOOK APPEARS ON AMAZON
This is the seminal biography of the magician's magician, Howard Thurston, a man who surpassed Houdini in the eyes of showmen and fans and set the standard fro how stage magic is performed today. Everyone knows Houdini-but who was Thurston? In this rich, vivid biography of the "greatest magician in the world," celebrated historian of stage magic Jim Steinmeyer captures the career and controversies of the wonder-worker extraordinaire, Howard Thurston.
The public's fickleness over magicians has left Thurston all but forgotten today. Yet Steinmeyer shows how his story is one of the most remarkable in show business. During his life, from 1869 to 1936, Thurston successfully navigated the most dramatic changes in entertainment-from street performances to sideshows to wagon tours through America's still-wild West to stage magic amid the glitter of grand theaters.
