I am very sad to report on the passing of another legend in magic, Bob Elliot.
From George Schindler :
Bob passed away December 7, 2010 - He was in a hospital bed, under hospice care with Alzheimer disease in his own home, and surrounded by family.
For many decades, the Elliotts were at the heart of the New York magic scene. They helped run Tannen's Magic Camp. They booked lecture tours, gave food and shelter to the rising stars of Magic, and never asked for a penny in return. You see, they already had day jobs, Bob working as a Mining Engineer and Happy working as a Stock Broker. Bob was a teacher at the Harry Lorayne Memory School as well as at the "School for Magicians".
Eventually they retired and moved to the West Coast. Their children grew up and prospered. Now the Elliotts live in a beautiful home on a hill, with sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean. When they relocated to Oceanside, California, they continued their sharing ways.
One of the highlights of my year in magic for 2010 was the opportunity that I was given to participate in Jamie D. Grant's "Send Wonder Campaign" in which I played a part in his street art experiment by dropping off bottle #79.
Since then, Jamie has started yet another "Impossible Bottle Campaign". Forget all of that! I just want to know what happened to Bottle #100?
In this interview, Jamie discusses his interest in street art, how he combines his career in magic with is day job as a paramedic. Oh... and don't forget that he also writes "Magic Friday," his amazing magic review blog!
LISTEN TO MY CONVERSATION WITH JAMIE D GRANT:
From the LA Times: According to the Los Angeles Fire Department, a fire was reported in the attic of the building at 7001 W. Franklin Avenue after noon. An LAFD spokesman described it as a greater-alarm fire and said crews were on the scene trying to put it out.
According to KMBC, a young magician was shot in the head after leaving the Pizza Parlor where he regularly performs:
Three teenagers were taken into custody in connection with a shooting late Tuesday night in Waldo, police said.
After the man was shot, he called police, who said the man was conscious and able to talk with them when they first arrived. The man’s injuries were determined to be significant, and he was taken to the hospital, where he is in serious condition, police said.
KMBC's Peggy Breit reported that the victim is a magician who entertained customers once a week at Waldo Pizza. "Eric the Magician" is known for throwing playing cards and making them stick to the ceiling.
Hot on the heels of the BBC announcement of their Saturday night show "The Magicians", ITV has announced that they have tapped Jonathan Ross to host their own magic competition show "Penn & Teller Fool Us." According to Stage News:
Penn and Teller - Fool Us will see aspiring magicians perform tricks in front of the pair, with the act who manages to fool the professionals winning a trip to Las Vegas to perform in Penn and Teller’s show at the Rio Hotel and Casino. READ THE COMPLETE ARTICLE
From what's New on TV BBC: Speaking about the concept, Penn said: "Nothing would give me or Teller more pleasure than to hand over Vegas tickets to someone - anyone - who had the nerve to stand in front of us, monkey with us, leave us baffled and ultimately blow us away with their brilliance. That would be a dream. READ THE COMPLETE ARTICLE
In other Penn & Teller news, Mike Weathorford has offered up his current opinion on their show in a column with the content spoiling title "After a decade, hilarious Penn & Teller magic still does the trick" in which he says:
Maybe you have to see some of the other 100 to appreciate the effort that Penn & Teller put into their show. The two pack more bright ideas into their comedy-magic in their 10th year at the Rio than they did in their third or fourth. READ THE COMPLETE REVIEW
Once in a while, someone pops up that makes me laugh until my face hurts. It was for this very reason that I hesitated to ask Chad Long to join Cameron Ramsay. David Kaye & Chase Goforth for a chat on This Week in Magic. Obviously, I'm happy that we did and this is the result. Chad Long is well known within the magic comminity for his lectures and appearances around the world and for the release of his take on the color changing knives, "Flash." So, what's so funny? Find out on this episode of "This Week in Magic" for the week ending November 26th, 2010.

UPDATE: This story was first reported here in September, but we now have additional details from the BBC 1 press release
According to the Daily Mail:
The BBC is to bring back a Saturday night magic show - almost 20 years after the corporation axed Paul Daniels.
A new series called The Magicians will see three acts competing for audience votes each week by performing a range of tricks with celebrity partners.
The show is due to begin early next year on BBC1, with comedian Lenny Henry currently in negotiations to present the series.
From the press release:
"I've always been a fan of magic on the TV,from David Nixon to David Blaine, Penn and Teller to Paul Daniels, and the far too glamorous Debbie McGee," he said.
"l love magic and the thing about me is that I don't want to know how it's done – I can't wait to host this show! You know the bloke with his jaw on the floor throughout most of the show? That will be me!" he added.
Article by Mark Stitz:
I am deeply saddened to announce the recent passing of New York City Magician, Carl Melish, also known as “Polaris”.
In the late evening of November 4th, 2010, Carl succumbed to a heart attack, precipitated by his asthma just after leaving the restaurant Dewey’s Flatiron, where he gave what was to be his final performance. Carl was 54, and is survived by his wife Mariann.
Carl was a fixture on the New York City magic scene for over 30 years. As an early student of Jeff Sheridan and Tony Slydini, Carl first started doing street magic in New York, then touring throughout the United States and Canada. Later on in his career, after returning to New York, Carl began working in restaurants and nightclubs such as Webster Hall, and America, and while having the occasion to perform for former President Bill Clinton, former Secretary of Defense Casper Weinberger, or tycoon Steve Forbes, his goal was, “As long as I made you smile”. And that he did!
Having an extremely quick wit, and an inimitable style along with amazing sleight of hand, it was an absolute joy to watch him perform, as he had an infectious laugh and truly enjoyed bringing wonder and delight to his audiences. He was an extremely warm, gentle and loving human being.
To know Carl, was to know joy, to know laughter, and to know magic. But today, the world will seem a little less magical without him. May you Rest In Peace, Dear Friend…
