MNW #170 :: MAGIC HISTORY CONFERENCE 2009
The 2009 History of Magic Conference has just wrapped up after presenting yet another line-up of amazing presentations. Johnny Carson's nephew delivered a talk on Johnny's love of magic. Burton Sperber lectured on a set of 19th advertising cards teaching magic and distributed a book of reproductions to everyone in attendance. Chuck Jones talked about his mentor, magicienne Dell O'Dell and Mike Caveney spoke about the Ediophusikon which he demonstrated later in the conference. Jim Steinmeyer lectured and demonstrated Devant's lost Beau Brocade illusion. Tod Robbins "interviewed" sideshow legend Ward Hall who also performed the blade box illusion and blow off. Mike & Jim's new Taschen book was a hot topic in the dealers room. Will Houstoun lectured on an 1800 manuscript of card magic in the Magic Circle library. Chris Woodward lectured on Great Rameses. David Charvet delivered a presentation on Ade Duval. Richard Lane discussed hypnotists from the age of Vaudeville. A lecture on Annemann was delivered by Peter Lamont who also talked about Dr. Rhine. John Gaughn's reproduction of Houdin's Orange Tree illusion was presented by John Carney followed by a field trip to John's new workshop. On the final night it was all about Vanishing the Lady. Jonathan Levit and Paul Draper were kind enought to grab a few interviews when there was time to spare and to offer their personal thought after the fact. Enjoy!
