Mike Weatherford gave "Special" status to Believe in his 2008 Top 10 Vegas Shows column today saying, "Criss Angel Believe" still deserves a special honor -- Why not? These are made-up anyway -- for providing the year's most dramatic narrative arc: an $80 million-plus train wreck that snapped Cirque du Soleil's five-show Vegas winning streak and may still prove to be beyond fixing."
As we reported yesterday, David Blaine participated in the annual New York Cares Coat Drive in Bryant Park. Numerous outlets have reported on the event bring attention to the homeless through the participation of the magician.
• New York Post Blaine stood in just a T-shirt and slacks in the 15-degree cold, collecting coats and autographing his custom playing cards for the fundraising event. But when asked to do some magic by those donating coats he apologised and said his hands were too cold. Blaine said: "If you really want to understand why the Coat Drive is important, try standing outside for an hour without a coat."
• NY Magazine : Magic-stunt-guy David Blaine gave the coat off his back for the New York Cares coat drive in Bryant Park yesterday, then stayed there and collected coats for the drive and autographed playing cards. Then he suspended himself in a freezing block of cryptic self-regard for 72 hours. (Just kidding, Dave, it's really cool you did this!)
Magician and endurance artist David Blaine will donated the coat off his back and performed magic tricks for people who donated coats to the 20th Annual New York Cares Coat Drive on Monday, December 22nd. The event took place at Noon, mid-park near the Christmas Tree at The Pond at Bryant Park. After donating his own coat, Blaine went coatless for the event to highlight the challenges the homeless face during the dead of winter. Now through the end of December, New Yorkers can donate adults and children’s coats at The Pond at Bryant Park and at hundreds of locations throughout the five boroughs including all NYPD Police Precincts, Grand Central Terminal, New York Penn Station, the Port Authority Bus Terminal, Oz Moving and Storage locations, the US Coast Guard Recruiting Station, Janovic Plaza Paint and Decorating Centers, and Time Warner Cable stores.

This is a bit of a departure from the usual magic fare that we offer up, but something that I'm certain most of our readers will find enthralling nonetheless. It may take more time than normal to load but is well worth the wait. Use your mouse and drage the slider at the bottom to different points on the timeline to see what happens. It's been five years since the illusionist-detective Jonathan Creek vanished from British television, but the Times Online reveals his return on January 1st, 2009 in an interview with creator David Renwick. "Of course, Creek wouldn't be Creek without the tousle-haired main character. But can he weave his anti-magic on viewers again? Renwick has few illusions about reviving popular TV characters: “People say, Oh Jonathan Creek's coming back. Fantastic.' And then they watch it and go: ‘God, what a mistake.' Which is what happened with One Foot in the Grave. So I tend to expect the worst.”

UPDATED :: According to the AP Newswire, "A David Copperfield show in Las Vegas ended abruptly Wednesday after the illusionist's assistant was injured on stage during a trick involving a 12-foot industrial fan. The show's producer says the man, identified only as Brandon, was rushed to the hospital after a fan blade caught his arm and broke it in several places. The man also suffered injuries to his face. The curtain was immediately closed and the show ended" Chris Kenner told the Las Vegas Review Journal, “It was a pretty scary accident. We’ve done this trick for years. We’ve probably performed it 4,000 times. When the fan is first brought onstage, it faces the audience and blasts air into the first few rows. Despite the demonstration, we always have people saying that it’s fake, or that the blades are rubber. The fan just caught him and pulled him in." According to an eye witness quoted in US Magazine, "One of the assistants dropped to the floor. The curtain came down partially. Blood was everywhere, and the other assistants dragged the victim back. Then the curtain closed all the way. Shortly after, Copperfield came out and said, 'We have an emergency and we might have to end the show...please give me two minutes.' He came back a minute later and said, 'I'm sorry, the show is over...if you want your money back, refunds will be given.' Brandon remains in the hospital after surgery where he has been visited by Copperfield who presented him with a magic set to practice with during his recovery.
Not John B. Pyka according to a press release recently distributed. Following a discussion related to the various possible identities of the Masked Magician at Magic Cafe, one of the places where the allegations were posted, John posted a press release from which the following is excerpted:
"The rumors started circulating quietly at first" says John, "Tim Deremer in Canton OH was the first to voice speculation when the TV series first aired on MyNetwork, and it has gained steam since then." While John admits he is a controversial figure in the world of magic, he states that the rumors are false. "I am not the Masked Magician" says John emphatically. "I am a lot of things, but I am definitely NOT the Masked Magician."
